The third page begins on Friday 2nd July as the team began their journey from Yorkshire to Wiltshire. After over eight hours on the road they stopped for the night at Brimpton near Newbury.
Saturday July 3rd and the team arrived at the Vickers Supermarine Gala Day at South Marston Airfield near Swindon. Norman Barclay was the driver for the day. His first run stopped the clocks at 10.55. Peter put this down to the engine being too cold. The next pass saw a big improvement (despite lifting the throttle once) and Norman officially became the quickest British driver on British soil with a 9.77/155 (see timing slip, left). The third run was to have been the final of the clas 17 eliminator against the only other entry in the class, the new Cadillac powered dragster of Allan Herridge. Unfortunately Herridge had problems with his car and Norman soloed the car to an 11.46/154. It seems he red lit on this run, and Peter didn't get the timing ticket, but the time and speed were recorded in the BDRA report of the meeting. The team returned to Brimpton for the night and made their way back to Yorkshire (8 hours via Bedford and the A1) the next day. At the bottom of the page Peter recorded that the car had now made twelve runs in the hands of the Croft Partnership. |
